Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Clayton is a small town with a lot to offer. The city was founded in 1857 by Joel Henry Clayton and his brother John Brewer Clayton. Originally from New York, the brothers came to California during the 1849 Gold Rush. Clayton was named after Joel Henry Clayton, who was killed on August 13, 1862 while serving with the Union Army during the American Civil War. The city is located on the Diablo Fault and is surrounded by rolling hills. Many of the buildings in downtown Clayton are built in the Victorian style and the city is known for its quaint shops and restaurants. There are several parks and trails located within the city limits, including Mt. Diablo State Park which offers hiking, biking, and camping opportunities. Clayton is also home to the World’s Tallest Diploma, which is displayed at Clayton Valley Charter High School.
