The existing 30,000 square foot play area was one that was dated back to the early 1990s and needed a major renovation to bring it into line with the current code and bring the fun back. Heather Farm Park is the largest public park in the City of Walnut Creek, including the Aquatic Complex, the Tennis Center, the Skate Park, the ball fields as well as the lakes with walking trails throughout the park. The City wanted a truly unique, destination playground that also offered children of all abilities a fully inclusive playground. What came out of this dream is the newly built All Ability Playground at Heather Farm Park, which opened in October 2014!
Starting in 2013, Carolyne Challice, the architect of the City of Walnut Creek, began to see what the new All Abilities Playground would look like and how it could best cater to the City and the surrounding communities that call the park home. With the additional support of landscape architect Brian Kilian of Borrecco / Kilian & Associates, Ms. Challice reached out to three different manufacturers and began to get ideas for space. Through this process, Miracle PlaySystems was chosen to design and supply the equipment that would be located in the center of this special park. Custom designed playgrounds by Miracle Recreation & HAGS, along with rocks, boulders & fallen trees by Rocks & Ropes, as well as special shade structures throughout the Sun Ports play area, all work to add exciting space.
The Miracle Playsystems team of sales representatives & designers was able to help the City through the design process to ensure that the new playgrounds worked to serve children of all abilities. This is seen throughout the park with ramps that allow a child in a wheelchair to access the playground from the ground level to the 6′ high level, allowing all children to experience the thrill of play!
The community has already benefited greatly from the opening in October; the city has commented on how popular the park is and how many more people use the park than before. By bringing more families and children together, the park has more than accomplished what the city has set out to do. Not only has this renovation transformed the park, it has re-energized the community.
